Monitoring at Ol Doinyo Lengai
Despite the fascination that Ol Doinyo Lengai garners from locals and the volcanology community alike, monitoring of this strange volcano remains scarce. ... Several volcanologists and scholars maintain comprehensive sites monitoring activity on Ol Doinyo Lengai. Compiling data from expeditions to the volcano and information from locals, Frederick Belton and Celia Nyamweru maintain accurate websites pertaining to eruptive activity at the volcano.

Ol Doinyo Lengai (or Oldo Inyo Lengai), Tanzania (2.751°S, 35.902°E), the Masai “Mountain of God”, is a unique, 2890 m, active stratovolcano in the East African Rift Valley. Current eruptive activity in the summit’s north crater produces a natrocarbonatite lava at relatively low temperature (540 to 593° C; Pinkerton et al.
Oldoinyo Lengai » Formation & History
Oldoinyo Lengai is less than 0.37 million (370,000) years old, and is the youngest big volcano in this part of the Rift Valley. These volcanoes are composed of alkaline rocks, relatively low in silica and rich in compounds of sodium and potassium. Oldoinyo Lengai was formed by a complex sequence of events, including explosive eruptions of tuffs and agglomerates and effusive eruptions of lava. Over most of the cone the rocks are not well exposed, but on its eastern slope a large valley provides a partial cross-section; see the photographs below.
Earlham College - Ol Doinyo Lengai The Mountain of God
Ol Doinyo Lengai is unusual in that it is extrusive carbonatite. Also, rock near Lengai is generally alkali, and have high levels of sodium and potassium. This is why it is called natrocarbonatite. Few other carbonatites contain these elements. The predominant minerals in these lavas are nyererite and gregoryite, which are anhydrous so they react very quickly with the water in the atmosphere when they reach the surface. Lava flows like black water out of Lengai; only during night eruptions does the lava glow red.

Ol Doinyo Lengai means "Mountain of God" in the language of the Maasai people. I do not speak that language, but I do know that it was a real bastard of a climb! Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only active volcano I've ever climbed, and at the top we suddenly found ourselves in this bizarre lunarscape that looked like the product of one of Salvador Dali's nightmares.

Tanzania's only active volcano is Ol Doinyo Lengai, whose name means "Mountain of God" in the Maasai language. Here the 9,480-ft (2900-m) conical mountain is reflected in a rivulet of Lake Natron, a large soda lake that was in the process of shrinking due to the onset of the dry season. The white stripe spilling off of the peak is ash, not snow.

Oldoinyo Lengai, in the photo above, juts out of the floor of the N’guruka Depression in northern Tanzania near the base of the Gregory Rift Escarpment about 10 miles south of Lake Natron. In 1962 J. B. Dawson established Oldoinyo Lengai’s uniqueness because he determined that it is the only active natrocarbonatite volcano in the world. Typical volcanoes eject lava with a high content of silica bearing minerals (think quartz sand).
Cave on oldoinyo
Oldoinyo Lengai is the world's only active carbonatite volcano, situated in northern Tanzania within the Eastern Rift Valley, at 2.751 degrees S, 35.902 degrees E. It forms an isolated symmetrical cone at the southern end of Lake Natron, with a summit elevation of 2,890 m ( 9,480 ft). Periodic eruptions of ash and lava have been recorded since about 1880, and with increasing precision during this century since 1904.

Introduction Oldoinyo Lengai was continuously active between April 1983 and June 1993 [1,2]. In spite of the lower eruptive temperaturesand viscosities of the lavas [3], the volcanic processes occurring on this volcano are identical to those occurring on silicate volcanoes. During previous work on this volcano, we made the first detailed measurements of thermal erosion beneath active lava flows [3,4]. Until mid-June, activity was characterised by the quiet extrusion of low-volume lava flows.
Timescale
In early 1960 Oldoinyo Lengai began an eruptive cycle characterized by quiet extrusion of sodium carbonatite lavas. stant.) As a contribution to this subject, and to illustrate the power of the technique, we present here the most extreme disequilibria between Ra and parent Th iso-topes yet measured in volcanic rocks-those in 1960 ... If the Ol-doinyo Lengai carbonatites represent remobilized evaporite similar to the Lake Magadi deposits, then the process must have taken at least 0.75 million years, which is the minimum time required to reestablish equilibrium in the U-series.

Tanzania’s Ol Doinyo Lengai is unique for two reasons: It’s the only active volcano that erupts natroncarbonatite lava, and it’s within a region where the Earth’s surface is just beginning to rift apart. This month, Assistant Professor D. Sarah Stamps of the Virginia Tech Department of Geosciences is launching an observatory there to track activity of both the volcano and the continental rift.

SUMMARY The magnetization of fresh natrocarbonatite lavas from Oldoinyo Lengai in Tanzania is dominated by small amounts of single- or pseudo-single-domain grains of a spinel in the solid solution series jacobsite (MnFe204)-magnetite (Fe304). Although this phase may acquire TRM before carbonatite lava crust has ceased being mobile, the Oldoinyo Lengai samples are good palaeomagnetic recorders of the field they cooled in.

Silicate subgroups are all based on the structural arrangement of the silica tetrahedra in the crystal lattice. The importance of most silicate minerals is in their abundance: silicates comprise >95% of the total mass of the Earth's crust, and except for the carbonatites of Oldoinyo Lengai, are typically 95-98% of volcanic rocks.

Active carbonate flows are enriched in alkaline (Na and K) - these are called natrocarbonatites. Extrusive carbonatites are particularly rare, and appear to be restricted to a few continental rift zones, such as the Rhine valley and the East African rift system. Carbonatites are igneous rocks with at least 20% of their volumes composed of carbonate (CO 3 2- ) minerals and are found almost exclusively at continental rift zones. This composition causes carbonatites to be highly reactive to earth's atmosphere, which is why samples are most often plutonic in origin (save for natrocarbonatite lava at the world's only carbonatite volcano, Ol Doinyo Lengai). Although they are volumetrically less common than other forms of igneous rocks, carbonatites are of great interest to geologists.

Mantle Origin of Oceanic Carbonatites
Carbonatites have generally been associated with rift systems, such as the East African rift which holds the world’s only active carbonatite volcano Oldoinyo Lengai. There are occurrences of carbonatite on every continent, but there are only two islands in the world that contain carbonatites. Fuerteventura in the Canary Island chain and the Cape Verde islands off the west coast of Africa both contain calciocarbonatites and are associated with alkaline silicate rocks.

The interest in Oldoinyo Lengai has extended over at least 100 years, but it was not until the eruptions of 1960, when the unique carbonatitic nature of its lavas was recognized, that the volcano took on special significance in volcanology and igneous petrology. The recognition of carbonatitic flows coin cided with the first successful laboratory experiments carried out on carbonatitic melts. Since then, Oldoinyo Lengai has formed a cornerstone in all carbonatite discussions.
