How do I become a volcanologist?
A volcanologists' work, to say the least, can be very exciting. When talking about his volcanology career, Robert Tilling states that "the present is the key to the past - In a sense, we're detectives, trying to decipher clues that rocks tell us." Another volcanologist, Ken Hon, says that being a geologist is kind of like "putting together the pieces of a puzzle."

Vulcanian eruptions are from hydrovolcanic processes (Fisher and Schmincke, 1984). Many volcanologists use the term Vulcanian for highly explosive, short-lived eruptions that produce black, ash- and steam-laden eruption columns as witnessed during the 1888-90 eruptions of Vulcano, a small volcano in the Eolian Islands, Italy (see e.g. MacDonald, 1972).

These eruptive columns produce widespread dispersals of tephra which cover large areas with an even thickness of pumice and ash (see pumice-fall deposits). The region of pyroclastic fall accumulation is generally asymmetric around the volcano as the eruptive column is carried in the direction of the prevailing wind, as shown here in this NASA image of the Klyuchevskaya eruption in 1994.

Mark Anders
About the Professor
The teacher inspired me to study geology in college. I graduated with a B.S. in geology from CWRU in 2002. Subsequently, I went to graduate school whereupon I studied physical volcanology. In graduate school, you really can study anything. Surprisingly, the University at Buffalo in New York is the home for studying volcanoes. Not the place you'd expect to study the hottest landforms on Earth (they have more volcanology professors than any university in Hawaii).
In 1808 he settled in Paris and published the findings of his New World expedition in Voyage de Humboldt et Bonpland (23 vol., 1805–1834), often cited by the title of Part I, Voyage aux regions equinoxiales du nouveau continent. Humboldt established the use of isotherms in map making, studied the origin and course of tropical storms, the increase in magnetic intensity from the equator toward the poles, and volcanology.
Paleoceanography at GSO
Paleoceanography/paleoclimatology at GSO stretches from the high latitude North Atlantic to the equatorial Pacific to ice cores from Antarctica. Usually stratovolcanoes. Examples include: Mount Pinatubo (Philippines); Mount St. Helens (Washington State, USA). Predicting volcanic eruptions is one of the chief concerns of volcanology. When a volcano erupts, little can be done to prevent property damage in the surrounding area. But many lives can be saved if people in the area are evacuated before the eruption begins.

Harford, who has a PhD in volcanology, or the study of volcanoes, is capable of some pretty sophisticated mathematical analysis. However, she and her colleagues initially relied on what she calls "napkin math" to explore other ways to generate more leads and price them fairly to agents. In April 2010, Zillow created a new feature—immediately copied by competitors—involving selling advertising to agents.

This research project is possible through the cooperation between the Department of Geodetic Engineering ITB, Directorate of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (DVGHM), and Research Center for Seismology and Volcanology and Disaster Mitigation (RCSVDM), Nagoya University Japan. The administrative, transportation, accommodation and financials support given by these three institutions are highly appreciated.

Student Stories
Many years ago, as an undergraduate science student choosing 2nd year subjects, I spent a long time weighing up between my two loves; geology & astronomy. I went with the former, and went on to have a satisfying career working as a professional geologist & geophysicist, an environmental geoscientist and undertaking research in volcanology (explosive mafic volcanoes).
Colloquium Abstract
Spectacular video recordings of Santiaguito Volcano, Guatemala, will be presented showing how geodetic measurements can be extracted from the video to model seismic source time functions. As future research, I will discuss a recently funded NSF/CDI project, called VolcanoSRI, which will significantly extend seismo-volcanology.
Oldoinyo Lengai » What is Carbonatite?
At the International Volcanological Congress held in Mainz, Germany in 1990 a symposium on carbonatite volcanism included a session dedicated solely to Oldoinyo Lengai, and the papers presented formed the basis of a volume of the IAVCEI Proceedings in Volcanology “Carbonatite Volcanism: Oldoinyo Lengai and the Petrogenesis of Natrocarbonatites”, edited by K. Bell and J. Keller and published by Springer-Verlag, Berlin in.

About the Author - Common Reading Experience
An article he wrote for Smithsonian about volcanology received the 1997 Walter Sullivan Award for Excellence in Science Journalism. His 1996 book, Into the Wild, remained on the New York Times bestseller list for more than two years. In 1999 Krakauer received an Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, intended “to honor writers of exceptional accomplishment.”
