Kilauea Volcano
Kilauea has been monitored ever since, making it one of the better studied volcanoes. Still there is much that we still do not understand about the inner workings of this volcano. Many of the members of Hawaii Center for Volcanology are working on Kilauea or have gained insights into the nature of volcanoes from visiting it. Unlike most other active volcanoes, Kilauea is approachable.
Volcanic History of Kilauea Volcano
Kilauea stands just under 4200 feet tall at it's highest point. Kilauea has a 165m deep circular caldera at its summit that measures 3x5km (or 6x6 km, including the outermost ring faults). It is said that Kilauea is the home to Pele, the volcano goddess of ancient Hawaiian legends. ... Bulletin of Volcanology, 57, 440-450. The current eruption sequence of Kilauea began in 1983 and has not involved the SWRZ. Output at Kilauea is fed by magma rising from a deep source to a shallow storage chamber (Eaton and Murata, 1960; Ryan, 1988; Tilling and Dvorak, 1993; Wright and Klein, 2006).

Kilauea
Kilauea (IPA: [ki?lauea]) is an active volcano in the Hawaiian Islands, one of five shield volcanoes that together form the Island of Hawai?i. In Hawaiian, the word kilauea means "spewing" or "much spreading", in reference to the mountain's frequent outpouring of lava. Issuing lava continuously since January 1983, Kilauea is currently the most active volcano on the planet, an invaluable resource for volcanologists, and also the planet's most visited active volcano.

Tiltmetres and seismographs help to give warning that is was going to erupt, so no one was hurt during the 36 day eruption, the largest eruption that was ever recorded for Kilauea. Kilauea is the youngest and southeastern most volcano on the Big Island of Hawai`i. Topographically Kilauea appears as only a bulge on the southeastern flank of Mauna Loa, and so for many years Kilauea was thought to be a mere satellite of its giant neighbor, not a separate volcano. However, research over the past few decades shows clearly that Kilauea has its own magma-plumbing system, extending to the surface from more than 60 km deep in the earth.

These so-called corn rocks were considered special enough by their creators to be built into the walls of homes constructed shortly after the eruption of Sunset Crater. Had I been in the mood at Kilauea in 1969, I could have created corn rocks, too, by laying ears at the base of the active hornito, and then retrieving solidified spatter that had splashed down on and molded around the ears.

Lava flows devastate neighborhoods on the flanks of Kilauea. The "fire pit", or active crater, of Halemaumau in Kilauea caldera sometimes holds a lake of bubbling, glowing lava. The side of Halemaumau Crater has collapsed due to mass wasting. Mineral encrustations grow around the vents of fumaroles, marked by rising steam. In 1959, a spectacular eruption formed Pu'u Pua'i Cone in Kilauea Iki, a large pit crater near the caldera of Kilauea Volcano.

About the Professor
The teacher inspired me to study geology in college. I graduated with a B.S. in geology from CWRU in 2002. Subsequently, I went to graduate school whereupon I studied physical volcanology. In graduate school, you really can study anything. Surprisingly, the University at Buffalo in New York is the home for studying volcanoes. Not the place you'd expect to study the hottest landforms on Earth (they have more volcanology professors than any university in Hawaii).

Emissions of CO2 by human activities, including fossil fuel burning, cement production, and gas flaring, amount to about 27 billion tonnes per year (30 billion tons) [ ( Marland, et al., 2006) - The reference gives the amount of released carbon (C), rather than CO2, through 2003.]. Human activities release more than 130 times the amount of CO2 emitted by volcanoes--the equivalent of more than 8,000 additional volcanoes like Kilauea (Kilauea emits about 3.3 million tonnes/year)!

Geology | Math, Science, & Engineering
Take an SMCC Geology class! Geology is more than just rocks—it’s the study of the earth and the materials that compose it, along with its structures, processes, and organisms. It also includes topics such as planetary geology, geophysics, geochemistry, petroleum geology, volcanology, oceanography, hydrogeology, and meteorology. At SMCC we offer courses in Physical Geology, Historical Geology, and Geologic Disasters and the Environment.
Igneous Activity
Earth's highest volcanoes are shield volcanoes. Most (not all) form on the ocean floor, forming volcanic islands or submerged volcanic peaks (seamounts). Example = Hawaii (Mauna Loa, Kilauea) , Iceland, Galapagos Islands. 3. Cinder Cone (Fig 9.16) - - Forms as a result of eruption and build-up of mostly loose, cinder-sized pyroclastic material from a gas-rich basaltic magma.
Humboldt
In 1808 he settled in Paris and published the findings of his New World expedition in Voyage de Humboldt et Bonpland (23 vol., 1805–1834), often cited by the title of Part I, Voyage aux regions equinoxiales du nouveau continent. Humboldt established the use of isotherms in map making, studied the origin and course of tropical storms, the increase in magnetic intensity from the equator toward the poles, and volcanology.
Paleoceanography at GSO
Paleoceanography/paleoclimatology at GSO stretches from the high latitude North Atlantic to the equatorial Pacific to ice cores from Antarctica. GSO faculty research interests include: micropaleontology, stratigraphy, sedimentary mineralogy and chemistry, and environmental magnetism. In addition, the volcanology group studies volcanogenic sediments in the deep sea. For additional information visit the Geological Oceanography page.

volcanoes
Usually stratovolcanoes. Examples include: Mount Pinatubo (Philippines); Mount St. Helens (Washington State, USA). Predicting volcanic eruptions is one of the chief concerns of volcanology. When a volcano erupts, little can be done to prevent property damage in the surrounding area. But many lives can be saved if people in the area are evacuated before the eruption begins.

Ecology of Hawaii, Itinerary
Views from this perch are the most spectacular in all Hawaii Nei. Jan 5: We will drive to Kilauea National Wildlife Refuge and join a refuge staff member for a behind-the-scenes tour of the excellent habitat restoration work being performed here to promote the breeding reintroduction of many of Hawaii's sea birds. We will have lunch, then travel to the Maha'ulepu coastline for an afternoon of swimming and snorkeling.
